That is way too much for that book, yes. I have seen first printings go for much less than that, though obviously not shrinkwrapped.

Question I have is, how does the seller know the numberline on the copyright page, if the box is sealed in shrinkwrap?

The only way to know would be if the seller had owned it since new. I have a few shrinkwrapped books that I know are 1st impressions, just by virtue of when I bought them (and I have retained the receipts and kept them alongside).

I doubt I would purchase a shrinkwrapped book and trust it to be a specific impression, though (except for new prior to any reprinting).

I guess one of the advantages of being a Hobbit is you can easily hide inside other things.

Seriously, though - you have to ask what the seller is thinking. And if the seller isn't the same person as glued the book inside the cover of a different one, you have to ask what they were thinking.

"Sir John Retcliffe was the pseudonym of the German writer Hermann Ottomar Friedrich Goedsche (12 February 1815 – 8 November 1878) primarily remembered for his antisemitism and the extent to which his fiction indirectly contributed to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion."

No idea why you would glue the Hobbit into his book
