Every time one of these comes up for sale, I'm happily reminded of this crazy episode:

https://www.tolkienguide.com/modules/n ... php?topic_id=2843&start=0

that was amusing to read! Now I understand where comments on that seller come from.

Also, I was pretty sure this particular book wouldn't be available for long. I know it's very scarce but it's still a lot of money .

Oh no... I missed it. Was it a good copy?

The three pictures are still there if you click on the link. I think it is a good copy, but I am by no means an expert.

Here's a chance to assemble a '50's set. The dust wrappers seem to be in better shape than the books which is interesting.

These seem to me to be “sophisticated”, as you noted - the dustjackets likely came from a different set, and the dealer (or someone before them) combined the nicer books with nicer jackets to try and realize a higher selling price.

If you look at the Fellowship, for example. On the rear board, the top corner of the dustjacket is completely worn away, but the red cloth board corner is sharp and completely unworn, sticking significantly out from the worn away jacket corner. Not a wear pattern that would happen if that book was in that jacket the whole time.

Ah, yes. That makes sense now that you pointed that out. I knew something was off about these but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Thanks Urulókë

The fellowship will fetch good money, even though the book isn't the best. Nice jacket.

What is your expectation on price for the fellowship? Does anyone here have any references of similar sales lately? Thank you
