That would explain it. The red ink on the 11th is pretty much a vanishing ink.
Every one I see looks like this or worse. This is one of the better ones where you can barely make out the lettering.

Did the 12th and later get better or is the 11th a very odd year?
You'd think they would learn some kind of lesson as to what works and what doesn't

Good friend and member of the site dunedain recently acquired a dream set of GA&U 1st print LOTR. He commissioned the rebind from the Chelsea Bindery and they did not disappoint. He emailed the images to me and I was obviously blown away. So I asked him for permission to share with you all here. dunedain may be a Tolkien dealer over at his site https://www.tolkienbookshelf.com/ (and a fine one he is) but he wants to let you all know that he is keeping these for himself and they are NOT FOR SALE

I acquired this last year but I thought everyone here would be amused at how unbelievably perfect and new this edition is. It’s the 3rd printing (1st) of the BOMC 2nd edition revised. Absolutely bonkers state of wear.
Have them in brodarts now. Slip case is never touched state (literally)
Only one small inscription in pencil (December, 1969). No foxing. No wear at all actually. Text block like it was printed yesterday lol.
Topstain had a little dust on top that was easily removable to be spotless (strange/see photo)
