It was €189 when it was bought up on reddit, though none of the previous backstory is mentioned in this listing, does make me think that the reddit story may not have been true.

It looks like soeone used it as a step. That is as much as it is worth. Pop it on the floor to that extra few inches, save stretching to reach that top shelf in the kitchen.

Just idle speculation at this point, but it looks to me like the prior reader was a heavy smoker and their fingers were tobacco stained. And they liked chewing on the board edges. ?

So it was owned by a dog with a nicotine habit?

The buyer (and current seller) previously messaged me privately about it on reddit. I personally do believe the story (which isn't to say I'm not a sucker!)

The story being that the item was bought from the Tolkien Shop and for whatever reason was not refunded.

I was suspicious that this story on reddit was correct.

To be fair, he didn't say he hadn't been refunded. At the time he posted, he either had not asked for a refund or was awaiting a response (awaiting a response was his claim at the point he deleted his post). It would be extremely odd for someone to claim he purchased it from the Tolkien Shop if he did not. I think I'd have to have some evidence (such as a statement from the Tolkien Shop) to jump to that conclusion. It is certainly possible, but it feels like a leap.

At the time, he stated on reddit that he intended to list it honestly with full pictures on eBay to recoup whatever he could of his loss. of course, he might have gotten a refund with no requirement for return and be selling it on eBay, but I have no no insight on this.

The eBay listing isn't hiding things. The book is a worthless turd and can be clearly seen to be a worthless turd.
