Trotter: the non-US, non-UK statement is implying, but not stating, that this is the "Canadian" edition i.e. those 1st editions destined for the export market; sellers always state this kind of nonsense. To be honest, I'm really sick of reading these sorts of listings --when are dealers going to stop assuming that Clowes printed books plus unpriced DJs equal "first state". This is not necessarily the case. Look for the errors, by all means, but don't just look for Clowes and prices. Bah!

Hi Khamul,
someone (nudge nudge) should write a definitive article for identifying Silmarillion states.

Hmmm... don't think I'm not thinking about it. But definitive is quite challenging. It don't think it can be done by looking at the books alone; by this method it would be more of an overview, with clearly stated limitations. I'd like to do some research down at some of the printers archives for a start; much in the way Deagol gathered information for some of his articles on his TolkienBooks (--there's a massive amount of work behind those articles.) I'll get round to it some day...

This is a first impression HardCover of THE SILMARILLION by J. R. R. Tolkien.
This Hardcover is in mint condition. I have been collecting Tolkien for 20 years so I am very careful with my books.
This Copy still has the dust jacket.
I had an appraisal done on this book by PBA GAllery, It is worth between $150 and $380

$380? Think I should just sell up the collection and retire to the south of France with Christopher then...
Note the Buy-It-Now price --$135!

The auction has finished, but look at the price --£159.90!!? Surely this is inside bidding, or something?

Well it is £154 more than I paid for my copy
How rare are these copies (possibly a very large number could have been issued with the replacement dust-jacket)?
