I will be attending Oxenmoot this year and was wondering if anyone could help me with which bookshops to check out while I am out there. I will mainly be in Oxford and London.

Thanks

Blackwell's is ofcourse a must if you are in Oxford. In London you have Peter Harrington Antiquarian Bookseller...

I will also be attending Oxonmoot.

In London, there is a huge choice of bookshops, but you may want to visit the following as they are all within walking distance of Piccadilly Cirus Tube Station.

I would suggest that you have a look at Hatchards in Piccadilly (http://www.hatchards.co.uk/), fairly small Tolkien selection but probably the largest number of 'signed' books by signed authors that you will ever see in one bookshop. There is a Waterstones about 100 yards up the road towards Piccadilly Circus, which has on the first floor quite a lage Tolkein selection, but Blackwells in Oxford is better.

For older books Charing Cross Road is definately worth a look, it has a lot of bookshops but make sure that you pay a visit to Cecil Court which is a sideroad and has some excellent bookshops specialising in rare books. It has been about 3 years since I did the bookshops in Oxford, but hopefully the following shops will still be there:

Oxfam Bookshop - on St. Giles - just down the road from the Bird and Baby.

There is a bookshop on Walton Street but I can't remember its name - about 10-15 minutes walk from Oxfam.

Blackwells - on Broad Steet - the main shop (next to the New Bodleian Library) has a great antiquarian/collectable section.

There are two shops at the Magdalen Bridge end of High Street, one of which is at the back of an antiques shop.

There is a paperback shop in the Covered Market and branches of Waterstones and Borders in the middle of town.

The Oxonmoot info booklet should include a map, but in the meantime you could try Multimap.

Hope this helps.

indeed I remember Oxfam shop... I managed to buy some Tolkien letters and some signed Tolkien books (like a 1st edition hobbit) there back in 1992 (or 1991 - i'm not really sure). You can imagine my amazement to find these items up for sale in an Oxfam store. Crazy? Yes! But true!

Beren; You foundthose books at an Oxfam shop??? WOW!! Thats amazing, you are so lucky.

Thanks everyone for replying. We are planning the holiday at the moment so it gives me a good start. I'm from Australia, so it will be the only Oxonmoot I will be able to attend.

Tinfang_Warble; have you been to Oxonmoot before? Whats it like? Do people do a tour of the bookshops after the events of Oxonmoot is over for the day?

I found a 1960 Two Towers at a bookstore in Cecil Court about 12 years ago, and a Reader's Union set at an Oxfam shop. It is worth poking around some of those stores to see what they have.

Hay-on-wye is the book lover's Mecca if you can get there.

Dior: I have been to my first Oxonmoot last year. Some people do visit some bookshops in town indeed. I am going again next september, so maybe we can do a bookshop-tour with a few collectors. Would be fun!

Tinfang,

That would be great!

If we both come across the find of a century, do we flip a coin for it?? ha!

Does Priscilla Tolkien still attend Oxenmoot?

She didn't last year, I understood because of health problems. Don't now if she will be able to attend upcoming Oxonmoot!
