I often wonder if it is just people taking a punt, knowing they probably won't be the highest bidder. Kind of like "play bidding". Otherwise, I can't really explain it.

I'm interested if this will sell at this price. It looks to me like a fairly easy repair (razor knife + some wheat paste mixed with PVA would probably get it back to the original state or close to). The S&Gs have always been less popular than CoH. I'd guess that if it was a damaged CoH, someone would have bought it. Personally as a text, I think S&G is more "successful" than CoH, but not ME, so not as popular, I guess.

I think it might be repaired yes, but I don't think it will sell at £300.
I agree with you Stu : if one could consider that SD CoH is better crafted, bounded and printed, plus the fact it is Middle-Earth related, I really like my SD S&G, the soft leather, the very strong binding, the magnificent endpapers. I'm also delighted with the text, plus exegesis by CT.
