Books and other printed materials >> Alan Lee Illustrated Lord of the Rings boxset [1992 Encore Ed.]
Another Encore set in Australia. Very overpriced, though, especially given the box has torn. And I'm not sure that laying it out on the tarmac to photograph it is the best idea...

So, just so I can get this straight...there are two variants of the HarperCollins Boxset, the HC proper and this Encore set.
There are also two variants of the HoughtonMifflin set, one with the silver stamping on the slipcase and one without it.
I have the HoughtonMifflin set without the silver stamping on the slipcase.

Another Encore box set, box looks in pretty bad shape
This ad has been online for a very long time, to my knowledge.
If that can help estimate its value, I recently bought an US edition (the one with the silver stamping on the slipcase) in great condition for £ 125 in BIN. I think I got a good deal

Is the HM one without stamping a legitimate version? I only ever saw one version (for sale from Tolkien Book Shelf) and I thought it was an aftermarket (or maybe prototype) slipcase. It has no markings at all, IIRC.
I bought mine from a 3rd party seller on Amazon a few years back.
I don't know how many of the second state were produced, but I haven't seen one for sale since then.

I don't imagine it is common - I've only ever noticed the single one that David Miller was selling some time back (and now yours).

Ahh, I see tolkienbooks.us claims it is a second state.
Berelach - How did you come to the conclusion that this was a second state, rather than a publisher's prototype or something else?
I can't remember unfortunately but I guess it's just poorly worded. I used the term 'state' when it should have been something like 'variant' instead. And calling it 'second' makes it sound like priority is given when really I'm (probably) just saying that there are two different cases out there. I'll change that, and I apologize for the confusion. My biggest regret about that site is that I didn't keep notes on the source of each piece of info.
