A few books I’ve picked up over the years that have some Tolkien material included in them, or are somehow connected to him. Both A Cavalcade of Dragons, by Roger Lancelyn Green and Winter’s Tales for Children 1 edited by Caroline Hillier contain Tolkien’s poetry. Winter’s Tales includes “Once Upon a Time” and “The Dragon’s Visit”, while A Cavalcade has “The Hoard”. I’ve been told Green was a member of the Inklings and studied under C.S. Lewis. A Cavalcade has a lovely dedication to J.R.R. Tolkien and both have some wonderful illustrations.
Graeme and The Dragon by Naomi Mitchison is a quaint fantasy tale that reminded me very much of the works of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien in both style and content. The cover illustration by Pauline Baynes brings both authors to mind, and was what caught my eye as I was browsing through a church flea market. It was a very lucky find for me. Apparently Mitchison was a colleague and correspondent of Tolkien. She is an accomplished author in her own right and has quite an impressive list of publications. Some of her correspondence appears in Carpenter’s Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien, and she is quoted on the dust jackets of the 1st edition printings of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
