Where does Onto the Road occur? Is that a Jackson'ism? Sometimes it's hard to remember which is which...

Just for fun I dug in a bit - Tolkien has "into the road" for this line in all editions - from The Return of the Shadow draft (p. 53) through today's editions - it has never been "onto the road" for that line.

That doesn't stop tons of Goodreads quotes from having it as "onto the road" though, and yes, Elijah's line at that scene does have "onto".

I wasn't really thinking of Tolkien at all actually. "Into" just made me think of stepping into... traffic! :D

Which actually says a lot of what Tolkien would not have had in his mind when he wrote those words, what a modern reader may have in their mind, what I had in my mind, and what Jackson & co. and those actors may well have had in their mind too...

Just noticed that Sibley also mis-quotes ("onto") this in his piece in The Great Tales Never End. Having said that, he also claims green isn't a primary colour, which is nonsense. I'd guess he's thinking of the primary colours (RYB) in art, which relates to how colours are made with paints.

Some artists still argue that green is a secondary colour so it's no surprise that others do too. That is of course a question for classic colour theory. Green is produced by combining yellow and blue, so they deem it a secondary colour.

That is from classical colour theory. And it's quite right, in that setting. But with modern tech, monitors, projectors etc, green is regarded a primary colour.

It's not really anything to do with modern, in that sense. Green is a primary colour in physics. In art, it's because you actually need a yellow (to add to blue) to make green. In physics there is no requirement for yellow. I tend to view colour theory based around man-made paints as pretty weak.

Either way, Sibley mis-quoted Tolkien!
