Interesting northman that your copy does not appear to have that green inner cover as you can see in the image supplied by Predictable Matt.
Lance I think (though northman could confirm) that this might be a quirk of The Two Towers, with the other two volumes having the inner cover in green (FOTR is here shown in the middle and ROTK at the end):

Yes, I now also see that in other listings. So, perhaps we are back to 2 issued 1959-61 sets: hardbacks w/jackets and large softcovers. Thanks to both of you for poking around at this.
