Dust Cover for First Printing RotK

I have two dust covers for RotK which do state which book Impression they belong to. Both are from first ed first printing British editions.

How does one know to which printing a cover corresponds if it does not state so on the inside flap or outside spine?

These RotK's are the only covers which do not state an impression. My FotR and TT all indicate to which impression they belong ranging from second impression to fifth.

The GA&U 1st Printing ROTK dust wrapper has two states. One of the ways these can be identified is by the rear flap of the wrapper.

The rear flap of your first image is taken from a 1st state ROTK as it has no quotes from reviews for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

The rear flap of your second image is taken from a 2nd state ROTK as it does have quotes from reviews for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

There is an article on Tolkienbooks.net about the 1st Impression of The Return of the King

Thank you Mr Underhill. I don't know how I missed that info on the Tolkienbooks website.

Do all of the wrappers for tFotR and TT have the impression no. on them?

When did they start printing the impression no. on the RotK?

The 2nd impression ROTK dust-jacket has the impression number, but it is on the spine of the dust-jacket, not on the inside flap.

On the whole the 1st edition dust-jackets, apart from the 1st impressions, include the impression details on the dust-jacket, either on the spine or more commonly the inside flaps.

Thanks, Trotter. I missed this info on the Tolkienbooks website.

Unfortunately the Forthcoming section of The Early Publishing History of The Lord of the Rings is not ready yet. It seems some of my questions might be answered there.
