*** - A Map of Middle-earth Drawn by Pauline Baynes Based on the cartography of J.R.R. & C.J.R. Tolkien * Signed by the artist * Copyright George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1970 *** Large-format card, reproducing original Pauline Baynes poster design (‘Postercard 24’). Approximate size 9 x 6 inches (22.9 x 15.3 cm). Distributed by Paperthings Marketing Ltd, London; printed by Devereux Litho Ltd. Pauline Baynes is best known for illustrating some of the most celebrated fantasies of the 20th century, most notably C.S. Lewis’s Narnia Chronicles, as well as several works by J.R.R. Tolkien, whose favourite artist she was. Her wonderful maps of Narnia and Middle-earth (for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) are much sought after. This vintage card reproduces her famous poster-sized map of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, originally published in 1970. The design includes ten small inset illustrations of important locations from The Lord of the Rings, and also depicts the members of the Fellowship of the Ring, plus Gollum, Shelob, Orcs and Black Riders. The card is signed by Pauline Baynes to the reverse, in blue ink. A wonderful piece of Tolkien ephemera, exceptionally scarce with the artist’s signature. Inscription and provenance This signed card is from the personal collection of illustrator Danuta Mayer (well known, among others, for her beautiful artwork for the Folio Society’s Yellow Fairy Book). Danuta was a close friend of Pauline Baynes for nearly 30 years; Pauline – a great animal lover – supported Danuta not only in her illustration career but also in her work with rescued animals. The card is part of a collection of books and ephemera signed by Pauline several years before her death, to help raise funds for Danuta’s small animal sanctuary. I have sold a number of these signed pieces for Danuta over the years, in order to help her raise funds for her animals. A letter of provenance can be provided if desired. Condition Card as shown in scans below. Bumping/creasing to corners, slight bumping to edges, a few bumps plus small indentations to surface. Reverse showing a little creasing below text (less apparent to front of card). Please see the many images below for details. To see all my auctions, please click here.
