I wonder if HC will make more boxes - I wouldn't be surprised considering the small initial amount (not to mention the 10 at least that were damaged according to Beren). After all, the 4-volume set was originally limited to 500 but then they made more (another 500?). Did anyone else snatch one (or 3) up on Amazon.uk for £135?

Yes indeed. Bought a couple for £135 on Amazon. Think the 3rd Party Seller (UKPaperbookshop) had a misprice on them.

Didn't realise that they made more (beyond the original 500) of the 4 volume set. Where did you see/read this?

At least 10% of the 100 are being sold through this company on ebay, at a large markup on HarperCollins price or Amazons.

Description: This lavish gift box of Tolkien's seminal works comprises five deluxe slipcased editions - The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, and Tales from the Perilous Realm. With an individual retail value of GBP340, this quintet represents a saving of GBP90, and only 100 sets have been made.

My mathematics is not very good, I can't reconcile £340-£90=£397.69

Beren mentioned about the 4-volume set a while back: "They originally made 500 sets, filling them up with the remainder of the deluxe editions. Since then another batch was made, so far I think that was again 500 but need to ask to be certain."

That misprice sure was nice especially since they shipped cheaply to the U.S.!

The text is from the HC website, where the box was listed at £250 full price - i.e. £90 cheaper than paying £340 for the individual books. Although, as the box appears to have been permanently discounted by 25%, the saving was even bigger.

As requested, I've posted some pictures of the box set, which I've placed in the following thread.

I'm glad I didn't purchase this set (and I did consider it). Essentially it is a set of Chinese-printed reprints in a slipcase that really differs only in size to the 4 volume set. If HC could be trusted to only stick to the 100 sets, it would be one thing, but they will quite probably just churn out a whole lot more slipcases at some point. For anyone who hasn't already got the 4 volume set (or the books individually), I can see the attraction, but otherwise, these seem to be fairly missable.

Cornell University Press is reprinting J.R.R. Tolkien, Scholar and Storyteller this spring (for some reason changing Essays in Memoriam to
Essays in Memorium).

Thanks for the heads up, Morgan!

I dropped them a note, hopefully there is still time to fix that.

Have you guys noticed that the little H 2012 "Collector's Edition", which was discussed a few pages, now appears to have a jacket? It didn't originally.

Check this eBay auction out:

the hobbit hardback

The seller sent me a few extra photos of the copyright & the jacket: see below.
