Both features are thought to have possibly inspired Birmingham born author JRR Tolkein when writing his epic novel The Lord of the Rings." Okay, I'm laughing at the "Birmingham born" bit, but does anyone know about the gates leading to the University of Birmingham law building? I haven't heard of that as a source before, but this doesn't mean it isn't true. - wellinghall

They have changed the text to 'based' now instead of 'born' in the article.
The gates appear to be next to the Clock Tower in the university and I am guessing that is what they are really talking about, as this regularly comes up as inspiration for one of "The Two Towers". If only Tolkien had had an imagination he would not have needed all these inspirations.
