I have obtained a copy of a Junior Scholastic magazine, dated April 23, 1938. It has an excerpt from the newly published The Hobbit entitled Riddles In The Dark, where Bilbo finds the Ring. It is the original version of the Riddle Game, later to be revised. It also has three pieces of artwork that would be deemed very politically incorrect by todays standards. Has anyone ever seen this piece of Tolkien history?

I haven't seen a copy. Sounds very interesting - how much of 'Riddles in the Dark' is reproduced?

I'm not sure what you mean by non-PC illustrations. Can you tell us what they are, and who they're by?
