I doubt it! I'm no expert, but I know a few and I've helped out one or two, now and again. For instance, in his write-up about the 1st ed. set on the front page at present, David says:

"The Return of the King - 1st UK Edition, 1st impression, the later state with the slipped type and signature mark '4' on page 49, as per Wayne Hammond's revised opinion."

It was I who provided Wayne with the information which led to that revision. That sort of thing.

I've never seen a first American Hobbit, as issued by Houghton Mifflin, without the maps. I have heard about copies which lack the maps, but those were always in library bindings.
