The Witch King and Saruman

The newest commission from premiere Tolkien artist and friend of the site, Ted Nasmith.

‘Seeking Directions; The Witch King and Saruman’. The newest original commission was a wonderful opportunity to depict a scene described in Unfinished Tales and the Lord of the Rings Appendices, the parlay of Saruman and the Witch King at Isengard.

Somehow it seemed to want a very unsettled background of wind and storm, as Saruman, fully conscious long since of having decided to serve darkness, is willing to aid Sauron, scheming that it will benefit him if the Ring is discovered. He’d already been breeding Uruks for many years in secret, despite his position as an Istari. (His attendant is an Uruk for this reason.)

The other Ringwraiths wait in the fog and gloom for the information they so desperately are seeking here. It was intentional that they seem almost ghostly.

That is stunning. I especially like the towers and the horses. Ted is a very, very clever artist.

Another great recent piece by Ted. Along with 'the temple of melkor' and 'rivendell looking west' this showcases for me an artist in really great form.

I recently commissioned a piece from Ted and couldn’t be happier. I love his work.

I had the chance to discover this illustration during my meeting with Ted last September, on his phone and with his explanations
It’s a weird feeling to now see the painting on the internet.

Thank you. I have been on the hunt for a Nasmith commission for a couple of years. Poor Alex Lewis has to suffer my indecision. I used to own the Smaug and Bilbo piece but much prefer the sweeping landscapes and more unique scenes like this. What's amazing is that, with such a deep catalog of works dating back decades, you never see any of these pieces for sale. There's 1 or 2 posted online in people's collecting galleries but that's it.

There are two for sale on eBay at present - they have been there a few months I think.

I could never part with mine. I often just find myself looking at them in awe - hours, days, years of entertainment await.
