I purchased this hardcover 1st edition, 5th impression Silmarillion at St Philip's Bookstore in Oxford. I know nothing about book collecting, so I was wondering if this is legit, and what it's value is.

If by legitimate you mean a true U. K. 5th printing then, yes that is what you purchased. Looks to be in good shape too. Not uncommon or particularly valuable, but a handsome book nonetheless. Also, Welcome to the site. 🙂
