My father in law is translating LotR into Latin, and he has sent me this email -
Have got as far as "The Road to Isengard", and find that glittering eyes watched the riders wanly from the shadows of the banks. "Wanly" seems almost impossible, especially when combined with "glittering". There is no comment from Hammond & Scull. I have translated it "pallidi", but am very unhappy with it. Do you think it could be a misprint for "warily"? I know from bitter experience how easy it is to confuse "ri" and "n"! Any ideas? - wellinghall

It is wanly - Tolkien knew a lot more about words than most of us; see Shippey's discussion of Treebeard's looking 'sad but not unhappy'. Once, 'Sad' meant 'settled, determined'.
Similarly, there's more than one way to look at 'wan' - see The Ring of Words p.25, fig. 9. 'Its original sense seems to have been 'dark in hue' with especially frequent application to things of gloomy unpleasant associations'.
