Anyone know why there is an actal actor playing Radagast? Either PJ is taking quite the creative liberty or I missed a chapter or two last time I read The Hobbit!

Radagast gets more of a mention in the Lord of the Rings than the Hobbit, but did not make PJ's movies, so I think your first point is correct, he has to fill up the three films somehow.

Though Radagast is mentioned in the Hobbit, unlike Legolas, Galadriel, Frodo, etc.
