That sounds like a future bibliographers nightmare!: mixing books & slipcases/boxes...

[Trotter, agree with what? ]

In regard to the Folio numbered deluxe editions, unless matching numbers is something you think is important (I don't), then £1000 for all three is just okay, by eBay standards.

Last prices I noted for LR (alone):
Nov. 2011: £429
Oct. 2011: £530
May 2011: £500

With prices for the Folio Silmarillion & Hobbit rarely exceeding £200 (you could reasonably expect to pick up both for less than £300), I think you pick up all three individually for less than £1000; maybe £700-800. They wouldn't be matching numbers though, & this auction also had free postage I suppose.

Out of interest, if they weren't matching numbers, would you guys still think £1000 was good?

There has never been a box for these early impressions according to tolkienbooks.net

The three impressions listed were out of print long before the first boxed sets were put together, so I would take any _dogfark_ auction descriptions with a pinch of salt.

I'd suggest a truck load of salt...
