I just saw a copy of this book on Ebay and noticed that the 2nd Impression Return of the King had "Second Impression" printed on the spine of the dust-wrapper.
My first edition copies of the LOTR in dust-wrappers don't have any indication of the Impression on the Spine, so I was interested to see if anybody knows how long this practice went on for and which impressions were involved? 2nd Impression Return of the Ring Wrapper Andrew

Not sure why, but A&U indicated the impression number on the spine rather than the front flap. They did this on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th impressions of RK, before they changed the layout to match the FR and TT.

Thanks for that.
It always amazes me that GA&U spent so much effort on documenting the impression of a book (and getting it wrong a lot of times), yet Houghton Mifflin seemed to have no interest at all.
