Illustrations from the Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass animated movie. "The calendar that is not supposed to exist." I have magazine advertisements (see below) announcing its publication date and then showing it had been cancelled. Obviously, the cancellation notice is incorrect. Thanks to the compilation of Tolkien publications by Nancy Martsch et al which included Tolkien calendars (which she very graciously provided a copy of), I was aware of its possible existence long before a copy of it ever appeared.
As noted, this calendar is not supposed to exist. Courtesy of Hildifons Took (aka the esteemed Mr. Hunnewell), following are advertisements from Publisher's Weekly (1977) and Fantastic Films (Feb 1979 and April 1979.) According to the 1977 Publisher's Weekly advertisement, it was to be issued in a "mailing carton." However, in 2013, a cache of these in shrink wrapped mint state appeared for sale on Ebay.
Dimensions: 13 x 12.25 inches (w x h); stapled on the hinge; shrink wrapped.
Rarity: Has appeared on EBay many times in mint state. (7) Has appeared less often in used condition. (9) (m,x)
