Tolkien discusses the details of, and placement within the text, some of his illustrations in The Hobbit, as well as potential changes to his illustrations for Mr. Bliss.

He includes a further six more pieces after his previous selectionSee Carpenter #9: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Susan Dagnall • 4 January 1937 (#9)[1] were accepted for publication. Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull again note the contents.The Hill: Hobbiton across the Water, The Trolls, The Mountain-path, The Misty Mountains Looking West from the Eyrie towards Goblin Gate, Beorn’s Hall, and The Hall at Bag-End, Residence of B. Baggins Esquire (Artist and Illustrator, figs. 97, 102, 109, 111, 116, 139; Art of The Hobbit, figs. 10, 16, 34, 38, 44, 90).[2]

A significant quote from this letter (that does not appear in Carpenter) concerning the secret runes can be found in Hammond's Bibliography.
