Transcript
Complete
'Tolkien on Tolkien' is the title of an article published in Diplomat (October 1966) without Tolkien's permission. It was edited by an unknown editor from two sources, Carpenter's Letter #165 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Houghton Mifflin Co., 30 June 1955) and Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Nancy Smith • 25-26 December 1963 (#511).

Said in the J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide: Readers Guide - Part II to have come from two sources, the article can be read using Carpenter's Letter #165 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Houghton Mifflin Co., 30 June 1955) alone. Made up of seven paragraphs, it can be read in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien thus:

(1) p. 221 - lines 10 to 22 (1918 was written as 1913, both incorrect, read 1917)
(2) p. 220 - lines 30 to 31 (ends at "(as such)")
(3) p. 221 - lines 23 to 33
(4) p. 219-20 - lines 26 (starts at "a primary 'fact' about my work", p. 219) to 5 (p. 220)
(5) p. 220 - lines 6 to 15
(6) p. 220 - lines 16 to 23
(7) p. 221 - lines 34 to 39 (last paragraph)

Read Hammond/Scull's entry (see reference) for details of the textual errors found in the article.
