Writing to Edith on the first day of Michaelmas Full Term, Tolkien describes the situation at Oxford. His college is empty and the Examinations School has been turned over to caring for injured soldiers returning from France.
Tolkien notes that he has joined the Officer Training Corps the day after he returned to Oxford. Catherine McIlwaine notes in Tolkien: Maker of the Middle-earth, p. 139, that the streets of Oxford are filled with injured soldiers.
