Tolkien describes his evening manoeuvres with the cadets to Edith in this letter. The cadets fall in near the Bodleian Library. Tolkien describes the weather as fresh, with a bright moon and the cadets had marched through North Oxford to Wolvercote. They trained by staging mock attacks on trenches while in Port Meadow.
