Priscilla Tolkien sends Pauline Baynes a postcard, inviting her and her husband Fritz to attend an at Home with buffet lunch at Priscilla’s house on 3 January to celebrate J.R.R. Tolkien’s 80th birthday.

On the back PB has written ’19 Beaumont Street / Walter Hooper’.

On 29 November, 1971 Pauline writes in her diary that "Joy phoned to say that Edith Tolkien had died."
Pauline would also add in her diary for 3 January, 1972 that she is "off to Oxford to JRR Tolkien’s 80th birthday party in Priscilla’s house, the Rayner Unwins, Donald Swann, Joy Hill, Neville Coghill, and a few others and a buffet lunch – old boy in great form."
