To
Thomas Malcolm Knox
Date
17 December 1947
Type
Autograph Letter Signed, Author Copy/Book
Transcript
Complete
Tolkien sends thanks for his time with Knox in Scotland. Tolkien had given his lecture 'On Fairy-Stories' to the University of St Andrews in 1939. Noting that Knox was essential in picking Tolkien for the lecture. He also sends a copy of Essays Presented to Charles Williams.
A facsimile of the letter was published in Tree of Tales: Tolkien, Literature and Theology.
Hammond and Scull remark that Tolkien "notes that he took Knox’s advice (evidently in intervening correspondence) to publish On Fairy-stories in full and without reference to the University." We do not currently have details of earlier correspondence and we are actively looking for any but so far no other entries are found in the guide relating these "intervening" letters.
