Writing to his friend and colleague E.V. Gordon, Tolkien says of Gordon that he has been treated badly. He says that he cannot help enough on the Pearl manuscript but will offer help as he can and will certainly read the proof and offer comments.
He believes the work complete and that Gordon should continue the work alone. (In 1953, E. V. Gordon's widow would finally publish the text, and in her preface makes mention of this fact, “Later, when he found himself unable to give sufficient time to it, Professor Tolkien suggested that my husband should continue the work alone. This he did, and at the time of his death in 1938 the edition was complete—complete, that is, in that no part was missing and all had been put into form, -if not final form.”)
Tolkien goes on to talk at length about Sisam and academic/theological matters regarding Sisam, 'Dom. W', and publishing.
