Tolkien expresses gratitude for the letters he has received from Christopher and briefly mentions an inclination to envy his time in the hills. Tolkien has been having sleepless nights and says that this is due to his work, and the very noisy road outside. He has been obsorbed in work on The Lord of the Rings, particularly the chapter on Shelob and the disaster in Kirith Ungol.
