Tolkien writing to Rayner says that Volume Two reads “rather well” and notes that the first book contains very few errors.

He hopes to arrive at the Allen & Unwin offices around noon^{3 December, 1953. See Chronology, p. 440. Tolkien delivers the typescript of The return of the King and he and Rayner discuss other matters inc. maps, informing Hobbit fans, artwork, etc.[1]} and accepts Rayner's invitation to lunch.^{While in London, Tolkien also meets P.H. Newby of the BBC and records his introductory talk for his translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.[2]}
