Writing to Rayner Unwin, Tolkien tells him that he has had very little time for literary work of late, but says that the latest royalty check from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings will help with matters. He indicates that the amount of work still to be done on various promised books has left him feeling slightly depressed.

A portion not included with the published excerpt has Tolkien returning mention to the "Scunthorpe list" which he says would require too much time which he at present he does not have.Chronology, pp. 587-8[1]
