Smith writes to Tolkien on his return to France, "attached 11th [Battalion] Lancashire Fusiliers, 25th I.B.D., 25 A.P.O. (S) 17, B.E.F."Chronology, p. 89[1] to say that he is sorry Tolkien's summer plans at Great Haywood were cut short by his call-up to action in France. He wishes he and Tolkien had been assigned the same battalion.
A longer quote (believed to be from this same letter due to context given by Garth) appears in Tolkien and the Great War, but the letter is dated 9 June 1916 there, as opposed to the ?18 (possibly 11) June given in Chronology.
