Tolkien had informed the Ministry that he was still suffering from disability and they write to direct him into a hostel (or colony) for treatment. They note that they have raised his retired pay to the full allocation but that he will be required to use some of that money for any care he needs.Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull note that he did not do as directed and used the verso of the form to write a poem, 'The Ruined Enchanter: A Fairy Ballad'.[1]
