Tolkien took up his position at Leeds in June 1920 but within months had applied for two positions elsewhere. The first of these was at the University of Liverpool, who turned him down. Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Liverpool University: Department of English • c. Late 1920 (#1610)[1] Cape Town however did not, and he was offered the job at the end of January 1921. We have no record of Tolkien's application or any replies but we know that they must have existed.

This entry, and Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Liverpool University: Department of English • c. Late 1920 (#1610) are not letters per se but applications.
