TCG Letter #1798

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
David Nichol Smith
Date
16 September 1934
Type
Autograph Letter Signed, Manuscript/Proof Document
Transcript
Complete
Tolkien sends his essay Chaucer as a Philologist: The Reeve's Tale, to David Nichol Smith. He hopes that Smith will be available to meet him before term starts.

Tolkien described Chaucer as a Philologist as "laborious and clumsy" but he hopes that he has made some good points.

Tolkien remarks that he has "suppressed overt reference to one of Masefield's less happy efforts which inspired it".
Notes
John Masefield gave a talk on Chaucer and published Chaucer in 1931.

Tolkien uses the word "draf" in this letter. See the Middle English Compendium for more details.
