Tolkien writes to GA&U and encloses the most recent photograph of himself as requested by Susan Dagnall. He asks them again about Houghton Mifflin's need for colour illustrations as he does not want "labour in vain".
Notes
Hammond/Scull note however that Tolkien has already "made four colour for The Hobbit: Rivendell, Bilbo Woke Up with the Early Sun in His Eyes, Bilbo Comes to the Huts of the Raft-elves, and Conversation with Smaug."
