Tolkien sent a copy of The Hobbit to his Aunt Mabel, but it is not known if it arrived before her death.Mabel Tolkien Mitton - 1858 - 1937. Her date of death is not known but through some digging onthetrail suspects that she died c. 22 November 1937. If the book had been sent to her upon publication, she likely had seen the book.[1] John D. Rateliff notes in his History of The Hobbit that her sister, Florence wrote to Tolkien early the next year Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Florence Hadley • c. end of 1937 - early 1938 (#1994)[2] and mentioned that if Mabel received the book, she (Mabel) would have sent it on to her (Florence).History of The Hobbit, p. 884[3]
