From tolkiengateway.com: Tolkien writes that he is currently "putting final touches on the third volume of The Lord of the Rings (evidently in Appendices D and E)." He remarks that delays in the publication of The Return of the King have been his fault, not the publishers. Furthermore, Tolkien mentions other writings.

The letter was quoted in Sotheby's English Literature and History 18 July 1991 and a picture was published which sadly is almost impossible to read.
