Tolkien writes discussing the maps in The Lord of the Rings and his much needed holiday in "Gondor ...: Pelargir and Lossarnach" (identified in a note as 'Italy: Venice and Assisi').

Tolkien mentions the revising of the book and seeing through the job, especially the "Appendices, demanded by readers", and complains of his workload. Tolkien then refers to the labours of the new map of Gondor and Mordor saying that "I believe when Chris turned the scaled sketch into the beautiful new map he sat at it from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. continuous!".
