Tolkien had begun a longer letterCarpenter #171: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Hugh Brogan • 18 September 1955 (#517)[1] to Hugh Brogan giving reasons for the inclusion of archaic language in The Lord of the Rings. He did not finish that letter, and instead opted to send a short note to say that these considerations are better discussed when they next have chance to see each other.
