Tolkien asks Davis to accept this book as a token of "gratitude for the goodness and friendship" they had offered him.

Notes

Tolkien sent Norman and Lena Davis an autographed copy of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil with an inscription and a personalized note. The book and its contents were presented to Merton College, Oxford Library by Professor Davies on the 14th August 1986.
