Tolkien sent his heart out in sympathy. He had grown to admire and love her husband and was more grieved than he could express. Father Gervase Mathew would say a Mass and Tolkien planned to serve him, and he would have Mrs. Williams and her son in his prayers.

The transcript in Carpenter's Letters is complete. The original handwritten letter is reproduced in C. S. Lewis: Images of His World, edited by Clyde S. Kilby and Douglas Gilbert (1973). The original was also reproduced (partially obscured) in the Wheaton College 1987 Daily Events Calendar.

A complete transcript is held at the Marquette archive from the first edition of C.S. Lewis: Images form his World and the original can be found in the Charles Williams archive at the Wade Center, shelfmark 447/1-2.
