Tolkien begins with apologies for his late reply, he has been very busy with work, staying up very late even. He says he has knows nothing about drama and is thankful such things are not a part of his chair. Rosfrith Murray wrote asking for advise about the Shakespeare play The Tragedy of Gowrie, which concerned her mothers family who were Ruthven's, of the Earls of Gowrie.

Rosfrith Murray (1884-1973), was the fourth daughter (and ninth child) of lexicographer and celebrated founder and editor of the Oxford English Dictionary Sir James Murray.

The first page, of a two page letter was reproduced at Bonhams Auction House.
