Lewis writes to Tolkien on the matter of the Merton Professorship of English Language and Literature, the chair from which Tolkien will shortly be vacated from at retirement. Lewis thinks it is a "deplorable vacancy". He hopes to see Tolkien at their Monday meetings at the Eagle and Child.
