From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Stanley Unwin
Date
31 July 1947
Type

Transcript
Partial
Tolkien responded to Rayner Unwin's comments about The Fellowship of the Ring. He talks about allegory as well as other literary illusions.

Tolkien mentions in a post script that he is revising The Hobbit, which had needed to be amended due to work on The Lord of the Rings. For details on these revisions see Hammond/Scull, Reader's Guide, Part 1, p. 509 onwards.[1]

Tolkien had failed to post this letter at the time and included it with Carpenter's Letter #111 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Stanley Unwin, 21 September 1947).

1 For details on these revisions see Hammond/Scull, Reader's Guide, Part 1, p. 509 onwards.
