in Carpenter's Letter #111 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Stanley Unwin, 21 September 1947), Tolkien had asked Stanley Unwin if he felt a $1,500 fee for a trip to Boston, Massachusetts would leave him money left over. In the absence of Stanley Unwin, a staff member writes to Tolkien and thinks that there should be a fair sum left over.
