TCG Letter #2765

From
Stanley Unwin
To
J.R.R. Tolkien
Date
17 April 1950
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
After Tolkien's ultimatum, Carpenter's Letter #127 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Stanley Unwin, 14 April 1950), Stanley Unwin replies that as Tolkien demanded a yes or no, that his answer is sadly no. He would have liked to investigate the word count and look at the completed manuscripts. He would have hoped to find a solution, but he feels "disappointed to find myself pushed into such an embarrassing position".
Notes
A short time after Tolkien had given Allen & Unwin the ultimatum over the publication of The Lord of the Rings, he tells Milton Waldman of Collins that he is free of any obligation to Allen & Unwin. Milton at this time arranges for him to visit the Collins office in London. See Chronology, p. 382
